THE UNITED NATIONS: The U.N. Food and Agricultural Organization has published a report on the world's forests. The FAO report says the world loses 9 million hectares of trees a year to development and other uses. Forests are disappearing most quickly in Africa and Latin America. But the report says the rate of loss worldwide is slower than five years ago. Forests are increasing in North America and Europe. And the report says new tree farms have largely balanced losses in Asia.
